Bundelkhand is one of the most drought prone regions of Uttar Pradhesh. Hilly and uneven terrain makes agriculture a challenging task here. Hence land levelling works undertaken under MGNREGA here are of utmost importance. In one of the panchayats we visited- Maudehat in Mauranipur block, Jhansi- these works have immensely contributed to the livelihood of the natives as they could efficiently transform some barren patches into productive agriculture lands.
Kishan laliya used to be a migrant labourer few years ago. He owned 1 acre land which was hilly and uneven and unfit for agriculture. However in 2010-11 his land got levelled under MGNREGA. Today he is a farmer. He cultivates two times a year and grows wheat, Channa etc in his land. `` I am so thankful to this scheme. I have a steady source of income now. During my previous harvest I sold produce worth Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000’’.
MGNREGA was a real blessing for Lutty Srivasthav as he is enjoying dual benefits from the scheme. His 4 acre land was levelled under the scheme. Moreover, a well was also constructed in his land. ``It was impossible to do agriculture here due to scarcity of water and uneven topography. But land levelling and construction of well gave me a new lease of life. Now I cultivate two times a year and I grow wheat, brinjal ,tomato, potato etc. I have sold produce worth Rs 70,000 previous year’’
